My tomato plant!! It has.... Sprouted a vegetable!!!! Just one, thus far, but I'm very proud!! It has not developed big enough to eat by the end of the year, sadly, but I'm very happy that it even grew one at all! I will keep watching it, although I probably will stop documenting it. Anyway, both plants have gotten extremely big since last time, which is a pleasant surprise. They're both growing at alarming rates, which is awesome, specially the supposedly dead tomato plant from earlier! It's huge! My tomato plant isn't nearly as big, but it's been developing fruit faster.
Closer pictures of the flowers! The basil has one, and it's very cute and small and white.. The tomato flowers are yellow and hang down, with seven petals.
I am looking forward to some tomato maybe before the end of the year! Seeing as I can't make any more measurements, my observations will return to qualitative ones. I'll make a graph of the data later, though. Outdoor basil plant. I haven't been using the leaves on this one very much, so it still has many up and down its stalk! One of the shorter ones has begun developing balloon-like leaves instead of sharp ones like its other two companions. This basil seems to be flowering a lot more, and a lot smaller, leaves than the indoor one. I will be unable to continue with the measurements, because I discovered my father had kept adding soil to the stems, making almost all of my measurements inaccurate. This basically has ruined any measurements that I've taken, when I was confused that there was no growth, especially. I also discovered he recovered the first tomato plant that I was confident had died, and it was growing beautifully and strong without my help at all, much bigger than the other tomato plant. As I not before noted it's status, I am sad to say I could not measure its growth.
The plants have been growing wonderfully. I'll make this post rather concise though. It has been 3 weeks since I had last updated. All of the plants have had some magnificent growth! I am very proud of my plants. First and foremost, though, I made a snack using some of the basil leaves!! It tasted awesome! It was simple Ritz crackers with ham and cheese on top with the basil leaves on top. The basil added some zest in it, and was an excellent topping. This picture has the indoor basil plant leaves. I made another batch with the outside basil plant leaves, which are actually noticeably less round and balloon-shaped than the indoor plant leaves. Those leaves are more sharp and crisp. They did have different tastes. The indoor plants tasted a little more sweet than the outside ones, which were a bit more zesty and bitter. It was a small difference, but I do believe I like the indoor leaves better. On to the actual plants! Look at how beautiful this one became!! In the last post, I was very concerned that it was unsuccessful and that it would die just like the first tomato plant. It was half-dead and half-living... however!! I did in fact water it religiously and now it's sprouted enormous (for its stem size) leaves, and well and green with life!! I'm quite sure it will grow up big. The stem has begun to become even more thick, rather than growing taller. It is now at 5.5 inches tall. However! When I measure the leaf, which has grown visibly big, ALONG with the stem, the plant measures to a grand 8 inches tall!! I am hoping that it will become bigger and begin to have tomatoes. That would be the coolest! (And it would be an awesome edition to my Ritz Cracker snacks! Tomatoes and basil sound like a great combination.) The indoor basil plant. Obviously, it doesn't have as many leaves anymore -- those have been consumed by me and my brother. This was taken before I ate the leaves, along with the next picture as well. All of the plants have grown a bit! Now, since the last time, more soil was added to the plant. I'd say about half an inch, so I'll simply add half an inch to the taller plant's growth. The one on the left is 3.5 inches tall, and the one on the right is 5.5. They both have grown a lot! The taller one is definitely growing faster, but the shorter fosters more leaves. The new sprout mentioned last time is 7/8 of an inch out of the soil! It's growing very well. Outdoor basil plant. It looks truly magnificent! More leaves than the inside one, but they have and obviously different shape, which makes me curious as to why it does. Less bugs have been biting, which is a plus! I haven't seen any evidence of the new sprout from Post #8. Perhaps it didn't make it. This plant has also been moved by the tomato plant! Rather, where Tomato plant #1 (deceased) used to live. I will take a picture of it next time I update. The two shorter have grown at the same rate of 1 inch, both measuring at 3.5 inches tall. The tallest one measures at an amazing 6 inches tall! That's a whole two inches bigger than three weeks ago! It has been 12 days since the last post. One of my tomato plants have died. The shorter of the two has not made it through the harsh weathering of nature. Shall it rest in peace in this short moment of silence for the almost two month old tomato plant. This is the still living tomato plant, who seems to be frozen in a half-dead, half-alive state. Half of it is wilting, seemingly, while the other half sprouts new leaves, which have been growing nicely and bigger since two weeks ago. It's evidently bigger from the pictures as well. Unfortunately, it does seem rather stunted in its growth-- it has remained at 5 inches tall. It is a tad less droopy though, I think. I have hope that this one will survive if I religiously water it everyday, and make sure it is well fed. On the other hand, both of the basil plants are doing beautifully!! They've each had a significant growth, and it's evident they are all getting taller. The inside plants are definitely faring better, because there aren't any bugs to go ahead and eat whole leaves off of it. The basil plants have been doing fantastically! And even better, the both of them have one new baby plant sprouting in each of their pots. I tried to take pictures to the best of my ability. It's been about 3 weeks since my last post, and evidently, things have changed. The tomato plants have begun to die. They're falling victim to bugs and other hungry small creatures. So have the outdoor basil plants, but they are faring better. The indoor basil remains untouched, yet all the same, still not nearly as well as the outdoor basil trees. Here are pictures of the tomatoes. They're wilting, but I hope they'll come back to life or something soon. I think they might have just had a lack of watering. The one on the left has grown to about 4.25 inches, and the one on the right is 5 inches tall. Indoor basil plant. I think it might be faring the best of all four of the plants, seeing as it isn't exposed to any bugs when it's indoors. It's grown quite tall. I suppose the inside and the outside plants are just about equal in height, if I were to take averages. The one on the left is about 2.5 inches, and the one on the right (the taller of the two) is 3.5 inches. Here's the outdoor plant. It's suffered from some bug bites, but it looks a lot more full of life and has many more leaves than the inside plants. All of them average around 3&5/8 in height. Today, I planted the indoor tomato plants outside, since they were getting quite tall! So now, they're out there. I hope they fare better than the potted outdoor plants. Though for sake of convenience, I'll still refer to them as the indoor plants.
Here's a picture! I decided to update just once before going off on Immersion! |
Honors Project
I've decided to, instead of make a long report, make a blog to report the progress of my plants daily. I'll be uploading pictures and noting my observations. Archives
