Timed Writing #6 - The Alchemist
The prompt for this timed writing was to describe how three people influences Santiago throughout his journey. My thesis statement was "Because Santiago is influenced by many people along his journey, he is able to achieve his goal through personal growth." I received a grade of 5- on this essay. I wasn't able to pick out good concrete details like the last two timed writings, so I feel like I should certainly continue to work on finding concrete details.
Timed Writing #5 - Of Mice and Men
The prompt for this timed writing was to choose a theme and prove how Steinbeck proves this theme through two different characters. My thesis statement was "Because of the disrespect shown towards Crooks and Curley's Wife, discrimination is a theme in Of Mice and Men." I received a 5 on this essay, which had me ecstatic. This shows me that I am indeed improving upon my writing skills, especially since the beginning of the year. The only mistakes I had were that I had forgotten one transition, I used an informal word, and I used one contraction. This shows that I've improved immensely to have only a minimal amount of mistakes. My main weakness is still keeping in mind the language to use, but I hope to achieve an even better grade on my next timed writing.
Timed Writing #4 - Romeo and Juliet
The prompt for the timed writing I chose to be graded was to prove which characters are partly to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet and why. My thesis statement was "The people who are most at fault for Romeo and Juliet's deaths are the Capulets, Tybalt, and Friar Lawrence." I received, surprisingly, a 5- on this essay. I had included a few past tense verbs and had a couple of errors in my essay. I found this a major improvement from my last timed writing essay, which I got a 3 on. I achieved my goal of finding much better concrete details, and thus helped me improved my argument immensely. My strength were my concrete details and my challenges were to keep in present tense.
Formal Essay #2 - Compare and Contrast Essay
The prompt for this essay was to compare and contrast how alike and unlike William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Philip Beard's Dear Zoe. The essay was to be written about themes like depression and suicide, the relationship between children and their parents, and fate. In my essay, I wrote about the theme of depression and suicide while comparing and contrasting the characters Juliet Capulet and Tess DeNunzio. My thesis was "Although Juliet and Tess both suffer from this illness, they deal with it in very different ways." I received a 4 on this essay. I feel this is a major improvement of the last formal essay I wrote, which was the The House on Mango Street essay.

This is the final version of my Compare and Contrast essay, which compares Juliet Capulet from Romeo and Juliet and Tess DeNunzio from Dear Zoe. The theme of depression and suicide are shown through these two characters.

Timed Writing #3 - Book Club #3 Reflection
The prompt for this timed writing was to find the development of the character throughout the story and how they grew. My thesis was that Diego had gone from an honest and truthful boy to a dishonest and untrustworthy boy. I received a 3 on this essay. I used many forms of informal language and my concrete details were not very strong. My weakness was mostly the details and commentary, and I feel I didn't prove my opinion with the evidence I provided. My strength was my thesis statement in this essay, for I was certain of what I was writing about. My goal for the next timed writing is to find better evidence and keep my thesis statement just as strong.
Timed Writing #2 - Book Club #1 Reflection
The prompt for this timed writing was to find the development of the character throughout the story and how they grew. My thesis was that Novalee had developed from an immature and naive girl to a loving and caring mother. I received a 3 on this essay I believe. It was my first timed writing so I was unable to fully finish it, and my writing wasn't very strong. My main weakness were my thesis statement not being strong. My strengths were my evidence, even though I had no direct quotes from the book. My goal for the next timed writing is to actually finish all five paragraphs and set a better thesis.
Formal Essay #1 - The House on Mango Street Reflection
The prompt for this timed writing was to talk about how Esperanza's growth throughout the House On Mango Street book. My thesis was that Esperanza developed from a naive young girl to a mature woman. I'm uncertain of the number I received on this essay [for either I can't seem to recall it or I never received my grade]. My strengths were analyzing my quotes. My areas of improvement are picking out better quotes to analyze. My goals for the next formal essay are to set a better thesis and thus better ideas for the body paragraphs.
